Next, hammer the sample flat to produce the bend and concentrate the bending stress at the weld region. Flattening helps the material yield and crack in a predictable way if the weld isn’t sound, making cracks more likely to appear at the critical locations. Finally, inspect for cracks carefully along the weld, its toes, and the heat-affected zone to determine whether the weld has passed or failed the acceptance criteria.
